old wooden table

I guess this is really basic but I am a complete novice at this! I have an old wooden coffee table that I would like to sand down and repaint a lighter wood colour.
Any hints and tips please?

I re-varnished a wooden table. I tested some colours on the underneath to see how the colour would look. It really helped me decide on the final colour and finish. It looks great. I found the hardest part, sanding the edges of the joints - but it was well worth the time and effort.
