We've just acquired a new house and found an old banker's safe under the stairs. I'd love to refurb it and put it in the house somewhere as a "feature". It's a bit rusty with flaking paint and the brass is virtually black.

Can anyone advise on the kind of preparation and the type of paint I require? I guess the safe is thick steel...thanks.

A good sanding down with aluminium oxide or use one of those mini drill things with a wire brush attachment (dont forget a pait of safety spex) then straight on with some traditional hammerite, that should help restore it to the old bumpy metal look.
