Painting coving

I have what feels to be an impossible task.

The living room and dining room covings are starting to yellow. The wallpaper is perfectly fine. I can probably sand the coving and get the wife to hold a vacuum cleaner underneath to catch the dust.

How do I paint the coving without damaging the wallpaper?

Any tips or tricks would be welcome.

Do you need to sand it? Can't you just paint over the top? You can get that blue decorators masking tape that isn't very sticky. Be sure to pull it off while the paint is still wet.

The sanding was just to key the surface for the matt emulsion. Light sanding rather than remove pre existing paint.
