painting formica cupboards

Cupboards are solid but ugly. I would like to know if they could be painted? Is there a special primer? I also would like to do the counter?

MY KITCHEN CABNETS ARE BROWN AND I WANT TO CHANGE THE COLOR TO A LIGHTER COLOR. THEY ARE FORMICA. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT I CAN DO? PLEASE HELP!
