painting new plastered wall

i'm a complete newbie when it comes to DIY so please excuse me for my question...

is it absolutely neccessarry to paint new plastered wall with a base coat for plaster or can i just use silk emulsion paint?

Hi. First of all dont use silk.
Use a contract matt emulsion. Thin first coat about 25 - 30%. Apply second coat thinned about 15 - 20%. Then start putting on your full coats.
Dont rub down first cos you may scratch plaster. you can gently di nib in between coats with a fine grade abrasive paper.
