I am about to paint my sash windows. Do I need to take them out of their frame to do this. I am looking at where the sash bit touches the frame and wondering how I can get a neat edge and not paint the windows shut.

Any tips?

Couple of matchsticks between the window and the frame should keep it apart enough so that they wouldn't paint shut. OR remove the beading, put a nail in the sash cord so it cannot go past the pully and remove the window from the frame if you want to do it properly. I'm only a DIYer but i've restored a victorian sash meself and it wasnt too tricky.
