My Philips Whirlpool AWG740 front loading washing m/c (now about 14 years old) needed new brushes last October. The repair man could not find the right ones and made a mod to some others to get it working. Now (May) the machine works fine except that during the wash phase, the drum doesn't move. However it does spin at the end of the cycle. Does anyone have any suggestion as to what might be wrong?

I was suspicious of the brushes fitted last Oct so I checked it out again with the back off - the m/c would move a bit if given an initial movement and whenever it moved there were loads of sparks in the motor. New brushes fitted now and it works fine.
