Pop-up Waste Shackle Problem

Because the hole in the previous shackle had enlarged, I replaced it today with a new one - Ideal Standard Pt No. A963404NU. However, the rod still slips through the plastic shackle and if I tighten the screw any more I will probably strip the plastic thread. The problem seems to be that the screw provided is a wood screw but the rod it is supposed to secure is steel. Is there another way that I can fix the new shackle?
