My wife has asked me paint an old nest of tables for a more modern look.

They were a dark stain originally.

I spent about 30-40 minutes per table sanding them then washed with vinegar and water. Not all the stain has gone, especially around the less (like staircase spindles)

Today i need to buy some primer.
Zinsser BIN is often mentioned but it is very exoensive and quite often comments are made about how dufficult it can be to use, especially for a novice painter. Is this the only real option?

Leyland Acrylic primer has good reviews too.

Any advice would be greatly received.

Many thanks!

As much as I like BIN, it is a nightmare to get a decent handpainted finish.

The Leyland acrylic will be fine as a primer. It is pants at obliterating dark colours though. I would then use oil based undercoat after, then finishing off with your prefered finish.

Thanks opps- I'm getting my garage sorted out for a bit of spraying ( furniture etc.) I'll give the BIN a go in the gun.

Not sure if you are using airless or HVLP. BIN can be thinned with alcohol, I assume that it means that you can use isopropyl alcohol if you find it difficult to atomise. Please let us know if it works.

That said, if you are spraying, pre-cat primer will probably be cheaper and less flammable, and much, much easier to sand back. Please, please be aware of the risks of inhaling it though.

Thanks opps I will go for the pre - cat primer. No worries re inhaling - I've got a fireman's BA mask I connect to the compressor.

Pre-act and acid catalyst paints are great to work with (ignoring the toxicity). I can spray a door and pick it up and handle it after 20 minutes (depending on the temperature), oh, and it is dream to sand whilst BIN is a mare to sand.

BUT be aware that you are dealing isocyanates. Safe when cured but have been rumoured to trigger asthma in in users that had never previously displayed any signs of asthma- I used to use it with a fag in my mouth (when outdoors). You may need to spend sometime online to find someone that sells it in small quantities if you don't need as much as 5L. Morrells only do 5L ISF might do smaller containers. When I sprayed my front door with a UV safe acid cat I purchased 1L tins (will try to find the link)
