People sometimes like to refer to the above (present day) as if it's caused by particular groups of people. That might be true in some cases. Some even seem to infer a bygone British era where everything was rosy and these phenomena simply didn't exist, or of they did, it was in very small numbers.
I've just finished watching episode 1 of 'The Real Peaky Blinders' on BBC2. An insight into the realities behind the glossy TV show in Birmingham and other areas across the UK from the 1800's onwards. Of course there's still a degree of sensationalism in the BBC2 prog, however it's heavily based on facts featuring real people.
I appreciate no one on here is naïve enough to think the phenomena as per this threads title are creations of very recent history, however I do suspect some on here hark back to a Britain that, for most, simply didn't exist. There was racism, there was sectarianism, there was brutality, there was gang warfare, there was low wage exploitation of thousands to build the empire.
The only real difference is most of those affected, whether victim or villain, weren't foreigners.
