Just been on to see what it's all about. B****y expensive that's what it is!

£40 per quarter PLUS £10 for each job you request client details for! That's just to quote!

First three months free subscription and first referral details free but you have to pay a tenner for each referral after the first. I registered to see what it's about and see if there are any jobs in my area.

The only plastering job on there close enough to me to be worth going and quoting is for stripping woodchip from two bedrooms and hall stairs and landing and then skimming the lot. Approximate budget? £100 - £250! Due to the wallpaper stripping I wouldn't do ONE room for £250 let alone the lot!

Regards

Fred

most of them are all a rip off. i reguarly get called by youfindus. We have work in your area already lined up. I crudly point out my order books are full and i run my business so i dont need to rely on others. As werewolf says dont waste the money. Customers will always appreciate and recomend a good, honest, tidy, professional tradesman.

ah, they use a system of rating like the mighty bay. well thats ok then, no chance of anyone telling a porkie.

I belong to www.nomorecowboys.com. Costs me £100/year. After each job I leave a questionaire that customer fills in and sends back. Customers comments are then posted on the web site for others to see. It took a while to work but now I seem to be picking up good work from them. Its also a good selling point to customer when visiting for a quote that they can report on my work afterwards ;)

Call me old fashioned, but tend to just do a good job for one person and then get several referrals from their friends/relatives/neighbours. I've never advertised

With regards to Rated Tradesmen or any other internet based venture, then of my recollection of the last 20 customers, I would say 4 were internet users.

I've put my postcode, and even some obscure ones in to the search, and for every trade, it come back that there are 'more than 50' in the postcode area. I find this hard to believe that there are so many local tradespeople, and such specialist ones in my area.

What is a 'specialist tradesmen' or 'traditional craftsman'. apparently there are over 100 near me. As a customer, how am supposed to know what these are and if I need one?

The only winners from this scheme are the people running it.

The site does nothing to guarantee a proper job or good tradesman. It is also open to abuse by cowboy customers.

If you do good work you can get more, and by not having to pay for the privilege.

Totally agree

80-90% of my work is 'referalls' but one hell of a lot of people get me through my website as well. I work hard at getting the search engines to find me.

Again I agree, I use nomorecowboys as an added recommendation so customers can get more independent opinions about me and my work. They also like the thought that I am prepared to let them comment on my work afterwards.

The site does nothing to guarantee a proper job or good tradesman.

Agree again

It is also open to abuse by cowboy customers.

Any bad reviews, not that I've ever had any, are brought to your attention by the site administrators for your responses and they also contact the customer for further info, this also helps keep it legit, rather than one of your competitors pretending to be a p***d off customer.

If you do good work you can get more, and by not having to pay for the privilege.

Agree again, but then customers from nomorecowboys then recommend me to their friends afterwards ;) Win Win Win all round for only £2/week ;)

I've just verified my account with rated tradesmen. In the last 24 hours I've had 5 emails of potential jobs I can quote on. I had a free referral so I've used that but I'm not sure whether I'll actually pay to subscribe to the site. Seems to be plenty of work but a lot of the customers don't seem to have a clue how much a job will cost.

I'm going to do an estimate to tile a kitchen floor with slate tiles. 9 sq m. Customer reckons he has a budget of £200. He won't get anybody to do a ceramic floor for that price.

how far is cheshire from near birmingham?

I need a kitchen re-plastered..

i've taken most of it back to bare brick..

mates dad quoted me £400 with supplying materials..

good price?

If the customer reckons his budget is £200, he really means £400.

I still wouldn't do natural stone tiles for that price. Some tilers I know charge £65 per sq m for slate

I have signed upto quite a few and to be honest most supply me with enough decent leads. however and this is a big however, steer clear of one called "Quotatis" they send you leads you have to pay for before you choose. I asked them to stop over december and finished using the email account i gave them. Guess what ! sometime mid jan I opened letter to find they have increased the leads sent since my request to stop, to almost double the previous month and when i questioned this the reply was " take us to court, we go alot and we have never lost" and we are talking around £500 for the month!!!!

Nuff said....you have been warned

I had a call from a potential customer who was quite definite that she wanted an expansion vessel replaced in her Saunier Duval boiler which she was convinced was only five years old. She would not look at it to confirm the model.

She knew it had to come off the wall and wanted my price for that. I told her it was unlikely to be the EXV leaking but more likely another plastic part inside. She was convinced it was the EXV.

I quoted £200 plus about £35 for the EXV. She seemed surprised the part was so cheap but said she had someone else who would fit the EXV for just £60. She thought I would undercut that price!
