I'm currently refurbishing my house and while thats happening im considering installing an alarm system. Im new to alarm systems and would like to go for a system that didnt have a monthly subscription etc.. but i'd also like a half decent one. Anyone have any recommendations please? What kind of things should i look out for?

thanks in advance.

You can buy professional alarm panels from electical wholesalers, www.tlc-direct.co.uk is the one I use. ADE panels are very good and an industry standard. Wiring is fairly straight foreword and can be done in a day. I would stay away from the diy versions. You can also get an Auto Dialer which will ring upto 3 numbers if the alarm goes off.

although i would agree with you, if you have never seen one before, a diy kit is easier. at the end of the day it is personal preferance. i have seen people put in diy kits and still get it wrong. perhaps at a later date if so desired he could update it when he feels more "comfortable" with what he is doing.

thanks for the replies guys.. i've seen the ones at tlc-direct and am interested in them.. although i've never ever done this kind of system before im sure the instructions are comprehensive enough to follow although it might take longer than a day. I guess at worst if i cant manage it i could always get someone in to do it.

you could always run the cables in first as this is the hardest part, then if you feel uncomfortable get some one else in.

a couple of words.

Run seperate 6 core cables in for everything, may take longer, but it is better in the long run, label each one at the control panel end as to where it goes to.
