Can someone recommend a product or method of removing paint from brass in this case the finger plate of a door. I don't want to scratch/damage it by scraping and white spirit doesn't seem to help.

Also I'm having a problem removing the glue from masking tape that has been left on the brass finger plate.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

A bit of petrol on a rag will remove the masking tape residue. Obviously
you couldn't do this on a porous surface.

You want to check if you've got a lacquered finish on your brass. If you use a paint stripper on it you'll remove the protective layer - not really a problem - you'll just have to keep polishing it.
