Can anyone tell me if old polystyrene ceiling tiles contain asbestos or can they be removed by myself?

If they're polystyrene they're polystyrene.

With luck they are stuck up with wallpaper paste and will come off easily with a scraper.
If you're unlucky it will be a contact adheseive and some will be very hard.

Don't worry about damaging the ceiling because they were probably put up to hide cracked and warty plaster. It won't have got any better in the last 40 years so will quite likely need pulling down and replastering.

The sooner you get them down the better as they can be horrible in even a small chip pan fire.
