Replacing Immersion Heater Thermostat

I need to replace the rod thermostat on my hot water immersion heater.

The current thermostat is 18", however I had to cut this in half in order to get it out of the boiler as there was insufficient space between the top of the boiler and the cupboard ceiling to accomodate the 18" length.

Can I replace it with a 11" rod thermostat?

u can but u'll loose a lot of stored hot water , when using the immersion only, as it will heat up less water, cos its shorter
