Hi, hoping you can help me (yet again - I am forever indebted!)

I have built a retaining wall, and the time has come to back-fill it. I was wondering if the gravel had to be a certain height or percentage of the height of the wall, and if it has to be right down at the bottom, i.e. could I fill a bit with soil, then the gravel over the weep holes? (I am presuming the gravel acts to stop the weep holes getting clogged with mud - maybe I'm wrong).

I would suggest that the gravel goes the full height of the retaining wall to provide a location for the water to drain to easily. The graval does provide a type of filter to the weep holes.

It is not a precise art however build as the diagram shows
