We have an out-building attached to the house which has an asbestos roof. It has been there since the house was built in the 1950's and has a surface area of approx. 150 sq ft. The profile of the asbestos sheeting consists of rounded ridges with a flat run in between (about 15 inches), the sheets are about 3 ft wide. The roof butts the house wall with a rendered seal against the wall.

The roof has several small leaks now and needs some attention. Due to the difficulties in disposing of asbestos, is it possible (sensible?) to leave the roof in situ and put another roof over the top or would it be better to remove and replace.

Much better to remove and replace. Asbestos is fine if undisturbed. You will save hundreds of pounds if you remove the roof yourself. Your local council will come and collect the asbestos free of charge if you have done it yourself (not a contractor) then get a contractor in after the council have been and gone

You must look into working with asbestos though and take as many precautions as you can. Sounds daft but best to do it in the pouring rain as long as there are no electrics in the outhouse!!!!

Thanks for the advice Mw, I wasn't aware the council would collect the asbestos so that sounds good to me. I understand about the rain - keeping dust down - there is a light and a twin socket but these can be disconnected without much trouble.
