Scale reducer units

Do scale reducer's work and are they worth fitting? I have been advised for my new heating system to put one on because this area has harder water.

We don't have hard water where i live, but it is harder in this area, hence the recommendation.

If i fit something what is the better product to use ? I would fit just after the water comes into the flat.

Interested in this, and the only one that convinces me so far that it might do something is the polyphosphate type like the combimate.
