sewer vent question

I have a small cottage with new plumbing. I also have a septic (not sand mound). My old plumbing did not have a sewer vent and the toilet flushed very slow and there was sometimes a sewer vent smell. The new plumbing has a 24 inch tall pipe outside - from foundation (not through roof) to let air in. Upipes in the basement prevent the sewer gas from coming back to the house. Two questions: Is it dangerous that the sewer gas has no place to go; when I flush the toilet there is a noise in my tub. The plumber got mad at me when I mentioned this. He said it is better than I had before and it is not a problem because upipes will prevent gas from coming back to the house. Should I worry? (I guess that is three questions.)
