Help....I'm under instruction and stage 1 in now complete...The missus wants me to box in the fireplace to make one of those "recessed features" so she can put something in it! Would appreciate a review my plan and confirm if it's gonna work....The inside of the fireplace is quite good condition and the bricks look quite good after I brushed all the soot of them.

Plan...

Fix a batton inside the chimney breast at the back
Fix the top board to block the chimney, dry wall adhesive the front, screw into the batton on the back
Use drywall adhesive to board out the rest of the fireplace.
Use the galvanised steel bead around the outside surround to get clean edge...apply some plaster.

I will put a vent in it to help air circulation.

One problem I see is the the chimney doesn't have a cap which worries me slightly....should I put something up there (black bag full of news paper?) or just leave it.....Oh I did suggest putting her up there...I found it funny :D

any advise/tips greatly appreciated...
