Smoke detector position

I have the stairs, kitchen and lounge at one end of my hallway and the front door is at the other end.

What would then ideal placement be for the smoke detector? Half way along the hall or nearer the end with all the rooms attached? I guess the latter but this would mean the alarm would be just outside the kitchen door which I am concerned will cause false alarms.

The alarm is an Aico optical unit if that makes any difference...

Can you install this alarm within 3 metres of all room doors, as that would be the best place, remember the detector needs to be installed in a space where there are no obstruction within 300mm of it. That includes light fittings, walls, shelves etc...
