Hi all, I'm in the long process of revamping my old victorian house.

I've got to the staircase and I have two split boards (not sure the technical term).

There's also a big gap appearing between the board and the upright that needs pulling together. The dark line in the pictures

I consider myself a competant DIY'er but not sure how to approach this one. I can gain access to the underside (not sure of the technical term) so can make repairs that way.

I've attached some pics which hopefully you can see,

Can you give me some direction on the right steps please?

I plan to strip them, paint with a stair runner up the middle.

Many Thanks

First the technical terms:
The bit you step on is the tread and the vertical bit is the riser.

The bottom of the riser should support the back of the tread below it.

Bearing in mind I'm just a DIYer, the way I would approach is:

From underneath, does the riser extend past and below the back of the tread, if it does, is the bottom edge of the riser and the back of the tread in good condition, so that you can screw through to fix to the back of the tread?
Alternatively, does the tread extend back beyond the riser, and in which case is it in good enough condition to screw through and upwards into the bottom of the riser?

If either of the above is yes, then to pull it back together, fix a temporary block of timber high on the back of the riser so that you can clamp from the top of the temporary block to the bottom of the back of the tread. Do up the clamp to pull them together and fix in place. Screw and glue!

To reinforce the split tread, just fix a piece of ply to the underneath, (again, glue and screw) fill, sand and paint the top.
