Re-building a stone wall with lime mortar and irregular stones. Aiming for about 4.5 ft. My inclination would be to build it vertical, but is it common to reduce the width as you get higher. If so, is it much more difficult than a vertical wall?

If your building it with mortar then vertical will be fine. Dry stone walls need a big taper for obvious reasons.
