This afternoon I visited a flat with a Talbot coupler between a 20 mm blue poly and a 15 mm compression on copper.

The brass nut and brass olive joint were leaking and on closer inspection the body had been cracked. There was PTFE on the olive which indicates to me that the installer had a problem with it when first fitted.

First question is to condirm that these are intended to use a brass nut and brass olive on the copper pipe. It seems to me that the strength of the plastic body is unlikely to allow adequate tightening of the nut and failure of the plastis body is to be expected.

Where are these fittings stocked? How easy is it to get the demounting tool?

Would anyone recommend a more suitable product?

thought you knew all the answers tony

can't say i have heard of these but you can get similar from Grahams & plumb center = black plastic to poly pipe and copper nut and olive to copper or plastic (must use both inserts or it will pop)

Plumb centre carry full range of Talbots.Normally come with brass nut and brass olive for the plastic to copper.

No one can know ALL the answers!

Anyway, I specialise in boilers and this is general plumbing.

I dont find Plumb Centres very helpful and they rarely have much stock and what they have is very overpriced !

If the customer can find a way of granting access to the joint then I will see what PC can offer. I dont have much expectation though! Most of their counter hands seem to have left school/dole last week! Even the managers dont seem very enthusiastic either. Their management at Leamington dont seem very interested either otherwise they would contact me to sort out problems.

I get on quite well with the Highgate branch - the one nearest me is pleasant but I think they share the communal 11W light bulb sometimes - I had to fight the manager for the branches last length of 15mm copper once... not literally though.

How can Highgate be closest to Hertfordshire?

Its smaller and thats always an advantage. The one and only parts man is usually away getting his lunch between about 12 and 2.30 though. The rest cannot find boiler parts. Even the fat PC ( Manager?) could be more helpful though. If you dont speak to them they ignore you and go to the back never to return. No friendly customer service there!

Since the young asian fellow seems to have left, the Staples Corner branch seems a waste of time.

In the same way that some people can fail to file their accounts on time.

In London I mainly use PPS Harlesden as you know Tony - they still beat PC, City and PB on most things - and I like winding Simon up about his Tonker toy car.... If it has to be PC then its normally the Highgate branch. If I am working nearer to home then Letchworth PC or City Plumbing - but I try and have things in stock from PPS.

For sundries like fixings, screws and the like I tend to use Screwfix or BES - but their web sites are like Porn... sad I know.
