Tanking a cellar

Is the normal render mixes suitable for tanking cellars ie: 4/1 sharp sand,cement.Do I need to add pva to the mix to make it water resistant,please help

You need a tanking kit. You paint the stuff on the wall and THEN replaster. If it's a damp proof course you're thinking of then you inject the chemical into the mortar course and then replaster, adding rendamix to the sand and cement mix.

The front wall in the cellar was done 'professionally'?(by a local posse) before we bought the hotel, the root of the problem was a fall pipe that was left as a soak away in front of the wall and they have not put a full concrete slab down, only concreted upto the wall which is built on a clay bed so it is holding water and causing rising damp(miss jones).Once I get the slab under the wall it should dry out, would a normal render then be suitable ?
