thinning paint.

Hi all
i have bought some metal care paint for the garden gates. it gives corrosion protection and an enamel finish and can also be painted on rusty iron.
I have decided to spray them so I need to thin the paint, the instructions say, thin paint using synthetic resin thinner what is this?
cant I just use white spirit instead, or do I do what it says on the tin...)

you could ask where you got the paint, but they will probably advise to do as it says on the tin
