I think there might be a case for offering offenders the opportunity to be locked in a room with a stiff drink, a pistol and one bullet and let them decide their own fate. If truly remorseful then the outcome would be clear. If the option were not taken up, then they obviously wouldn't be truly remorseful and the sentence should be increased accordingly.

Its about the punishment fitting the crime. Again we see the authorities giving the message to young people that its OK to assault and murder elderly people as the punishment is just a few years inside an unglorified hotel.
