Check if there's someone on your roof pouring wet sand down your chimney?

How long as this been going on? not since christmas by any chance?
;)

Is there a bird caught in there? dislodging loose and crumbling mortar?

the mortar in your cement and brick work is crumbling the hot and cold use will only make it worse what is it like outside holes in mortar maybe
white stains from calcium leaching from cement
crazycanuck

is the chimney used?, what sort of fire?
lost of sand?, how much, as is it affecting structural stability of the chimney?

rumbling sounds like a liner in there and th ewind catching it and bashing it against the damp parging of the chimney.
How old the house?

about 15kg old and new sand (new sand wet/ moist over old dried thick layer) stack seems stable .
2nd rumbling and more sand deposited today after 1st clean up
