Generally speaking you tile the walls first and then the floor. However in a kitchen (if you're starting from scratch) you'd tile the all the floor, fit the kitchen then tile the walls.

Really, I have done a bathroom from scratch and did the floor first.

Is it just to prevent getting adhesive/grout from walls on the new floor tiles, or is there a better reason?

Well that's one reason, but there is another reason. It's not that important, it's just that you can get little gaps appearing at the grouted joint between the wall and floor tiles if you do the floor first. I wouldn't worry about it though.

Ah right, I'm going to skirt it anyway so shouldn't be a problem :)
