I have a toilet that has developed a leak where the toilet U bend joins the outlets waste pipe. It is only a slight leak but I have had a plumber in to look at it. He says that the only way to efect a repair is to completely removed the toilet bowl and reseal from scratch.
As it is unlikely that such a seal will last the lifetime of the toilet without requiring replacement or reapair, I find it hard to believe that it this cannot be achieved without removal of the toilet bowl in its entirety with the accompanying danger of breaking the bowl and having to replace that as well.

Can anyone suggest an alternative?

He's right, and they usually last as long as the pan.
You could try silicone if everything's dry.
