Treating wood boring insects

When my son had a survey done before he bought his house, he was told 'There are signs of wood boring insect attack in the garage roof timbers'.

What chemical should we use to treat the wood?

I wouldn't bother using anything. Woodworm treatment is a snake oil sales area, similar to DPC injection.
 
I still wouldnt be wanting to use these toxic chemicals where you don't need to. Paint would do, all you need is to make it not look or smell like wood.

If it was a lindane type product, it would be a potential problem where ever you put it. That last link is really handy, thanks for that, I've learnt something useful. I have used borax for fungal treatment, but I didn't know about the borates and woodworm.
 
Thanks for the advice I will contact the companies and see what they suggest.
