Hi

I've just had an electrician out to wire up some underfloor heating and think he either pulled a fast one or doesn't know what he is talking about.

To save money I ran all the cables before he arrived and then he made up all the connections.

I ran a 1.5mm2 cable (5 m long) from a socket on the ring main to a dedicated fused spur. When the sparky turned up he said it needed to be 2.5mm2 and charged another £35 to run a second cable. He said it was because the thermostat was rated for 15A but does this matter? The heating cable is 225W and therefore can only pull about 1A. The thermostat can never pull 15A if the cable only pulls 1A. The thermostat is just capable of switching up to 15A if there was a higher load cable attached. Am I right?

Thanks
John

He is right, but his reason is *******s.

The cable to the spur needs to be 2.5mm because it is fused at 30/32A. Cabling after a fused spur can be 1.5mm, but that is only because it is fused at a maximum 13A.

OK Thanks.

That makes a lot more sense than his explanation and I can see the safety reasons for it now.

:D

There seems to be a pattern emerging. Was this the same electrician who did your lights or a different one?

Are you also trying to save money by getting the cheapest electrician you can find each time?

Yes it was the same electrician. His quote was cheapest but it seemed such a simple job I didn't think it could go wrong.

Lesson learnt.
