I have a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 petrol (W reg) that is winding over, it appears to have a lack of compression (but probably just not firing?). Low water level warning light and engine management light illuminated on dash. Tried tech2, no faults logged, still will not start. Any advice welcome.

Always start with the basics first - do you have a spark at the plugs then check that you are getting fuel to the engine.

Is your car an 8v or 16v?

My 1.6 16v had an intermittant fault where it would turn over and over but not fire, here Tech 2 would show up nothing. Later, however a misfire developed and I traced the fault to the coil pack, very common fault indeed.

When I worked at my local Vaux dealer here in N Ireland, we replaced so many of these.

If your cambelt is intact, might be worth pulling your plugs out and seeing if any are sooted up.

cheers

Checked cambelt, changed plugs, checked spark put it back together and it started will go with the coil pack if/when it fails again.

Thanks to all who replied.

Mark.
