no cavalier the haynes manual says i have to disconect drive shaft is this true?

There is very little difference changing a spring on a cavalier or a escort etc, yes you do have to undo the drive shaft nut as on any front wheel drive cars, you also have to remove the brake caliper from hub, don't left the caliper hang on the flexible hose.

And be careful with spring clamps, ensure that you tighten them up evenly, otherwise, wallop, a load of heavy metal in your face. Most unpleasant. Must be an easy job, managed it on my cavalier in my early 20's.

Make sure you've got the proper splitter for the trackrod end and the ball joint. The correct size of socket for the drive shaft nut and new split pin. Once you get the strut off if you can hold it in a vice and as you tighten the spring compressors make sure you're standing behind them. Then if the compressors do slip you don't get a face full of metal.
