I have got a vax VZL 7022.The motor has started to make some strange noises and there is a smell of burning. It isn't much to go on but hopefully some one can point me in the right direction as to what the problem might be.

If you have strange motor noises accompanied by a burning smell the armature is in all probability shorted out & the motor history. Usually the rest of the vacuum falls apart before brushes wear out (unless it is very old or used 24-7).
