We have recently had our loft converted and we are not sure whether the plastering is up to scratch. The plaster board joins are visible through the plaster but the plaster is quite smooth. A painter has told us that they will show up through the paint. Is this normal? You can also see some of the joint tape.

The join in the plasterboard and the pattern of the scrim tape is sometimes noticeable through the skim due to the different thickness of the skim coat over these areas. However, you should not be able to feel the join or the scrim tape - if you can it will definately show up when painted.

If a professional painter and decorator reckons it will show up then get your plasterer back and ask him to sort the problem out.

Thanks for the reply Fred. It's the first time we have had any work done on the house so we weren't sure whether it was ok or not. Wanted to know that we were not being fobbed off by the builder saying it was normal to have these visible joins.

Thanks again.

S.
