Dear folks,

I have a 10 year old Vokera Excell combi boiler that is becoming troublesome.

When the heating is on, and hot water is drawn from a tap, the boiler makes a squealing noise and the only way to stop it is to..

a) run the tap again and turn it off in quick succession, or

b) turn the heating off and wait a few minutes.

Now whilst this is not the end of the world, I've noticed that sometimes the squealing now starts for no reason at all. It is impossible to use the timer because the noise it makes is so loud it wakes the whole house up - and probably my next door neighbour too.

Any thoughts welcome.

Thank you.

Noisy fan ???

That would be quite loud outside the flue and possibly wake up the neighbour!

If no other fault exists then almost certainly requires a new later version plastic by-pass bobbin. This part is unique to this boiler but is in plentiful supply and not expensive, however I wouldn't trust anyone other than someone familiar with this model to confirm and replace it. That person should not be a problem to find on Tyneside.

Hi Tony,

Fan was replaced recently and is quiet as a mouse.

I mentioned the problem to the plumber who installed my bathroom recently and as luck would have it (or not, in my case) the boiler behaved itself and refused to make the noise when he was there. He also told me that he'd installed dozens of that particular model years ago and has never heard of the problem I was talking about.

Bypass spring loaded valves only usually make a noise when the user has been in the habit of turning off the heating at each radiator.

I saw one where the boiler was fitted 10 feet up above the stairs without any room stat. The tenants just had heating on 24/7 and turned the rads off.

Come to think of it was DPs relative's firm !!! I did not even charge them for my visit!

Nixt,

Apologies, I didn't see your post when I replied to Tony's. Surprisingly enough, when I did a search on this site for plumbers in my area - the answer was none??

I'm that fed-up with the problem I'm considering changing the boiler altogether - so if someone fancies a drive up to Newcastle I'll gladly hand over the beer-tokens and provide endless cups of tea/coffee, or something stronger if the palate prefers.

This one's built into the hydraulic manifold washer slackens on older type and vibrates in the water way making the noise, when its interrupted eg. water use, the by-pass moves and it temporarily stops.

Either that or I'm imagining the ones I've dealt with over the last 12 years

If you ask Heating Components, Gateshead (not an ad, nothing to do with me) they must have records of local independents who specialise in Vokera as they probably supply them.

Common problem in our area. When the dhw is shut off the fulcrum arm returns but because you've had a very slight leak (not enough to show) on the front seal of the primary side, you don't get full return of the afore mentioned bobbin. The result is that squealing sound. Simply a case of giving the pin a dose of wire wool and silicone grease and replacing the front seal (part 6919). As Nixt said heating comp in Felling will be more than happy to give you a couple of numbers. Their number is 4381618.

Hi,

I have tried bleeding the radiators but it hasn't helped.

I don't know my boiler from radiators I'm afraid, and therefore, thermocouples are way beyond me.

Can I just say a big thank you to everyone who helped me with the problem I was having with my boiler.

Heating Components provided me with a contact telephone number, and the engineer has been today with a service kit (inc new bobbin) and my Vokera boiler is now as quiet as a mouse.

Thanks one and all :) :) :) :)

Cheers,

d

Just a note to say thank you to the contributors on this thread.
I also have an old Vokera Excell boiler, which started making squealing noises each day after being on for a while. Switching on the hot tap stopped the squealing...for a while.

British Gas came out twice and the fault would not happen on demand, so they went away each time having done nothing, and the problem continued.

So I videoed the problem next time it happened, and found this thread.

On the third British Gas visit I showed them the video and this thread. They were very impressed with the explanation and solution (I'm afraid bobbins are beyond my understanding, give me computers any day). Parts were ordered and installed, and the boiler has been quiet as a mouse ever since.

I'm very grateful - I work from home and the noise was driving me mad!

Bypass spring loaded valve (shuttle in this case) does make noise on other occasions too (like when the rubber tyre on the shuttle goes loose). The MI says a bypass valve must be fitted to the boiler.
It is rare to find a combi boiler fitted with a roomstat

Tony very noble of you to waive your charge. I think you shot yourself in the foot on this occasion as you remain in the dark how my relative operates his business. Do you know for a fact if the repair was indeed carried out by one of his employees?
