i am renovating a 1920's end-terraced brick house and the walls need re-plastering . it will be expensive to get a plasterer to do the lot so i thought about plaster boarding. What are the disadvantages of choosing board over the normal method?

Are you planning to leave the existing plaster and put new plasterboard over the top of it?

You will need a means of fixing the plasterboard to the wall, either timber framing or dot dabbing (big blobs of adhesive!) the backing will have to be sound for this to work.

Then you have to finish the plasterboard - either scim coat plaster - back to the plasterer again or by taping and filling the joints which for best results should be done by a specialist, unless you are very competent in this field.

Taping requires sanding down between 'coats' so it takes more than one visit - and loads of dust.

Scim coating can be done in one visit.

Best to get quotes for both and take it from there.
