What kind of wall is this?

I'd like to paint a few walls but I don't know what the existing surfafe is called. Therefore I can't look up how to prep the wall and what paint to use. Could you guys help me identifying the material? Do you have any tips for painting over this material?

it looks like a textured wallpaper. If it is in a bathroom it might have some water resistance. It looks quite thick so look in your DIY sheds and see what is common in your country. it might possibly be intended for tiling onto.

Usually you would paint it with a vinyl emusion paint (water based). Silk finish is easier to keep clean than matt.

If you post more pics, put something in each to show scale. A measure, a hand or a coin will do.
