Hello,

I want to decorate this room
This is a very old house. The exterior walls are made from stone which has one layer of lime plaster added to it. On top of that is bonding plaster where it has been patched in places and then the gypsum plaster. There is also artex in places which has mostly been removed.

Can someone please tell me what I should do?

When you say PVA you mean applied by brush and then a coat of finishing plaster?

What about areas that have spalled right back to the stone?

Just fill any spalled patches with whatever you have at hand - S&C or browning or one coat, but not finish. Bring them to level of surface.

As "skimmers" suggested, PVA 50:50 with water, first coat with a roller and wide brush, when it sets, PVA again and start skimming when it goes tacky. Research on this forum.

Prior to any of the above, sort out all piecing-in of skirtings (5" or 7" Torus) and re-locating elec. outlets into flush boxes, typically located in the c/breast recesses.

Now might be a time to open up and sweep and smoke test the chimney flue(s). Vent them when clean and sound.

It might also be the time to check out the ceiling . Any remaining small areas of Artex -wet, wet, wet, and use a spatula scraper.

If you have any damp issues in the walls then all bets are off and come back here.
