What's the oldest tool......

......in your toolbox. Mine is a 26 year old adjustable spanner. Commonly known round here as a"shifter". When I moved to Yorkshire for a while, they called it a "mover". Consequently when I returned home and started asking for a "mover" I was met with strange looks. I think people thought I was after a dancer or some lithe beauty to assist me in my daily tasks.

My massive Jack plane is 31 yrs old, hardly or never use it now, only slight rust on it now. Electric plane taken over.........

Hi,

I think that there should be a rule that the tool must still be in use.

A battle-scarred and much abused over the years all-metal Black and Decker hand drill. Passed down to me in '76, it must be over 40 years old. I used it yesterday. It scores more points than hammers etc as it has lots of moving parts inside. There's probably something in the detritus at the bottom of my tool box that's even older. There's the screwdrivers from the army surplus store, they must be over 40. Oh yes, some whitworth spanners that get occasional use, they're 50 if they're a day old. I really must buy some new kit.

Me too. I've still got my old dad's club hammer, as well, which I use a lot. My grandad's barn was burnt down by an arsonist, or I'd have some of his tools.

My uncle was a tool maker, when he passed away i inherited a few tools, a screwdriver is stamped with his initials and the year he made it "CR 1944"

And to be honest as screwdrivers go the quality speaks volumes it is used every week. They certainly don't make them like that anymore!

My Stanley 71 1/2 Router Plane, which I picked up at a junk shop a few years ago. Don't know how old it is though, but it looks very well used.

also have a Bailey 5 1/2 Jack plane, but can't use it at mo as can't get right width iron for it.

I have an American "Miller's Falls" plane, which I have identified as being 1950s, it's a copy of a Stanley plane. Got it for a few quid from a place in Staleybridge (now sadly closed) that specialised in old woodworking tools. Took it apart, cleaned it up, lick of paint and varnished the handles - good as new.

ah, slight problem.. most of my favourite/oldest tools.....bahco slip joint pliers/allen key sets/ adjustable spanners/ are safely deposited in various lofts/cellars/crypts/gardens. and boy does that p £ss me off.

ive got an old mattock that my dad used when he was on the tools, god knows how old that is. On a slightly different note just come home today and my dads popped up and left me 3 wooded floats hes hand made. You just cant buy anything like it. Aw its given me a warm glow inside knowing im using something hes made!
