Whirlpool washer only washes

I have a Whirlpool washer, MOD LSR8444LQ0, only two years old. The washer will start the wash cycle and wash for awhile stopping before the rinse cycle. If I play with the knob I can get it to start on the rinse cycle but it still washes. I have replaced the timer and this was not the problem, please help.

Does it empty the water out after washing?
