I am starting to see some white dust around some compression fittings I fitted a couple of years ago

Do you think it is just because they’ve been leaking and those are limescale deposits or something else?

Yes Limescale - Calcium Carbonate, it's the residue left when the water dries up.

Are the fittings wet? give them a rub with some limescale remover, dry them up and leave for a little then check and see if they are wet.

I never noticed them being wet to be honest

Compression fittings can be like that, especially if they are fitted when the pipe is wet and the residual hard water, if not dried up, can leave a residue like that. As suggested, give them a wipe round or even a scrub with a green scourer and then completely dry them and go back after an hour or 2, if they're not wet/damp then don't worry about them.
