Just been thinking...
I'm geting fed up of creosoting.

Would I get a good result using other woodddppreserver e.g. everbuild wood preserver so I don't have to repeat the job of painting the fence so often?
or would the creosote already on the fence stop it working properly?

It is almost certainly not creosote. It might be a substitute or it might be a water-based waxy stain.

You can get Cuprinol spirit-based shed and fence preserver, which soaks in and protects against rot. Timbers in contact with the ground will rot unless you take abnormal precautions.

For fences, I mostly use the water-based stains as they are cheap and easy to apply with little preparation, and last several years.
