Dunno what happened to that thread there fellas.

Don't spoil it....

I was going to say that lots of sparks were working to old regs because, well...at one point they could!

Joking aside, when I first started dipping my toe in the industry in 1983, the 15th (released- in print anyway- 2 years prior) had been worrying the industry as it was so vastly different to its predecessor. It was decided to delay the full introduction of the 15th until 1 January 1985 as many voices fears they could not understand the new layout, based on the IEC regs.

That is why v.o. ELCBs were deleted from the regs from that date. Signalling the end of the 14th and the start "proper" of the 15th.

I think also that there were issues fitting in the IECs strict voltage requirements.

I do!

They've certainly spoiled (destroyed) the thread - but I just hope that they don't also spoil the forum as a whole - since people coming here for electrical advice might run away when they stumble across something they might expect of their children or grandchildren!

Interesting. I wasn't very conversant with the regs until "the 16th", so that all more-or-less 'pre-dates' me!

I started as an auto electrician, so construction and use regulations was what I started with. But father and father-in-law also in the trade, so aware of the earthing changes with the 14th 1966, but in the main we used guides published by the Union, not the IEE, even with the 16th edition, the guides were still done by the Union as well as IEE, and some of the exams were run by Union or Collages, not the C&G, which caused a problem later for those wanting to take the upgrade, if one had done the C&G one could do a short course and up-grade exam when BS 7671:2001 came out, but if taken the collages exam, you had to do full course and full exam.

The same when BS 7671:2008 came out, if you had taken the C&G for last upgrade, you could take short exam and course for new one.

The problem I found was new requirements were well published, and talked about, but when a requirement was dropped, very little was said, I still don't know when the distance to a sink for a socket went, it was not until an argument and looking for the regulation, I realised it was not there any more.

It would be nice to say, if allowed when installed it is still allowed, but I remember knife switches with open blades, clearly today enough to close down a site.

Today we have the EV and Solar panel regulations, every time I look, something new, no longer allowed batteries in the loft space I am told, on safety grounds in the case of fire, not the batteries starting the fire, but batteries exploding when fire started below them. Would that be a code C2 on an EICR, as they wanted to fit in the loft in my house, and I said no, and that's less than 2 years ago.

What about non BS 1363 items put in BS 1363 sockets, so feel that is fatally flawed.

It makes me smile to think that I have worked under the 14th., the regs that came out 2 months after I was born!

Then 15th, 16th and 17th, but I never made it to the 18th. Oh well...

I did 14th in 73, then 15th, 16th, 17th and finished on 18th.
