To attach legs to tables - the two main methods are (1)mortise and tenon (2) dowel joints. In some cases you might use a bridle joint strengthened with dowels.

A good book is woodwork for you by David Willacy ISBN 0091455219. It is old but good diagrams (first published 1981 by hutchinson).

Dove tail joints are neat and, if made well, usually look quite professional!
