Hi Zampa,

Sorry was not sure if you could private mesage but I am a novice DIYer well and truly but will put my hand to anything

I have a fully plastered spare room, it previously had painted lining paper on it which I have removed as it was a wreck, I have removed all the paper and gunk. NOw I did the unthinkable...firstly I used normal pollyfilla or no more cracks whatever it was which filled holes fine, then I went over with one coat of Basecoat (Pollycell), it still looks crap, has covered very little and overall I am a little unsure of how to advance.

First option I thought was buy a random orbital sander and sand the walls down fully, then simply do 2 coats of the coloured emulsion we've bought.

Second option was to crazily apply a second coat of basecoat (reading feedback on here not a good idea)

Third option, lining paper the whole lot although I have found on other walls in the house that even 1000grade paper does not hide all sins on the wall.

I have heard about this gyrproc stuff but am a littele scared of using it having never use it before. I really want to get all four walls completely smoothed down.

Please help. I need step by step but will take any help as know people are busy.

Right then..just got in from sitting in a poxy traffic jam on the m4 for 2 hours!

I'd go for the lining paper myself...you may need to do it twice if the walls are really bad but it should be wrth it in the end.

Give the walls a good sanding down first..its better that you have got a coat on them really...it will keep the dust down from bare plaster.

If you constantly fill, rub down touch up...fill a bit more rub down touch up you'l end up with loads of 'scars' on the wall from so may different types of finish.

Add to that the orange peel texture of the paint and it could look a right mess.

By lining it you are creating an equal surface all over the walls for the paint to sit on..if they are a bit naughty I'd go for a 1000 grade first then an 800 or 600 grade after..the lower the grade number the smoother the paper.

The Gyproc (easi-fil) is good gear but I cant think of a single job when I have had to use it and not lined the walls after.

so attacking it with a random orbital sander is not the answer then! THought about giving it a go but thought I might end up with a severely undulated wall. Can I get away with papering jsut two walls and lose the paper edge in the corner ir should I really paper the whole lot, reason being I don't want to move the radiator in there LOL.

Wil see how I go I guess.
