Zion and the Art of Armageddon

Gideon Levy, a columnist for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, says despite the clear opposition from Israeli security chiefs to plans for the intensified operation to take Gaza City, the Netanyahu government appears resolved to push ahead with the offensive. Speaking to Al Jazeera from Tel Aviv, Levy said the only thing he could see forcing the Israeli government to change course was “a phone call from President Trump – a phone call that doesn’t arrive”.

He said that while the Israeli government had been “very successful until now” in misleading the US president with “hollow promises” of a total victory in Gaza, Trump was facing pushback from his Make America Great Again (MAGA) backers and there were indications that his support could be cooling.

“There will be a point in which [Trump] will realise that he was cheated, but I don’t know when this will come,” said Levy. “Meanwhile, we know dozens and dozens are killed each day … The catastrophe continues.”

Since the cabinet resolution to reoccupy Gaza City, the Israeli military has issued 60,000 new recruitment warrants for reserve service. When the warrants come into effect in early September, the reserve forces will be at their highest level since the outbreak of the war – 130,000. But the military is not the only thing increasing in size. So, too, is the refusal movement.

Some conscientious objectors, like the teenagers of Mesarvot, go public with their refusal to be part of the war machine. They are treated with extreme severity and often subjected to cycles of imprisonment in military jail...[they] have come to be known as 'soldiers of peace'. Yesh Gvul, an organisation that assists those called up to obtain draft exemptions, says their number is constantly increasing. A recent poll published in Haaretz showed a striking increase in public support for those refusing to be drafted – about 33% of Jewish Israelis believe it is not only justified, but necessary, to save the hostages from the dangers of the military campaign in Gaza City.

Starmer must immediately recognise Palestine unconditionally, but he must recognise much more than that. He must acknowledge Netanyahu as the international war criminal that he is. He must support new sanctions to tackle the settler movement, including ministers such as Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. He must recognise that Netanyahu and his government are the main obstacle to releasing the hostages. He must recognise the people of Gaza as victims of a continuing genocide, and act accordingly. Or he will remain complicit in this devastating, human-made catastrophe.

It's official, genocide and war crimes...

from the link:

The UN's top court, the International Court of Justice, is currently considering a case brought by South Africa in 2023 that argues that Israel is committing genocide. The ICJ has not yet made a determination on the subject and has granted Israel an extension until January 2026 to present its defence.

However it'll be hard for Israel to argue in defence of its policy when the 1948 Genocide Convention defines genocide as: Any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group:

'Killing members of the group; Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.'

The IAGS also referred to comments made by Israeli officials and a plan first floated by US President Donald Trump and backed by the Israeli government to expel Palestinians from Gaza as further evidence that the criteria for genocide have been met.

Allahu Akhbar@Al Jazeera

A decision by the ICJ isn't expected til 2027 and the ruling (pdf) will no doubt go into the growing body of evidence being accumulated by prosecutors. Maybe 'biking would like to offer his legal services to the Zionist defence team?

Their job gets harder every day as more news emerges from an Israeli military database [that] one in four detainees from Gaza are identified as fighters by Israel’s military intelligence, classified data indicates, with civilians making up the vast majority of Palestinians held without charge or trial in abusive prisons. Those jailed for long periods without charge or trial include medical workers, teachers, civil servants, media workers, writers, sick and disabled people and children. Among the most egregious cases are those of an 82-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s jailed for six weeks and of a single mother separated from her young children. When the mother was released after 53 days she found the children begging on the streets.

The reaction from the Israeli lawyers is not encouraging.

It will be interesting what filly and the genocide loving gang make of this...

After all they only believe information that comes from the zionist terrorist state itself...

So given this is israeli data they can't fail to agree that israel is holding far more hostages than hamas...

And if there is to be any chance of peace ALL hostages must be released as part of any deal !

This should please some....Palestine action protestor now in charge of the police.
