My Baxi switches on fine but after say 10 minutes or so locks out (red flashing light every second or so).

By reducing the dial on the boiler (temperature control) from full down improves the situation until it is about at 9 O'clock (about half way) then it seems to be fine, but obviously not as hot as it could be.

I think its the heating system in some way rather than the boiler itself.
Can anyone help!!?

is it an old boiler? I have just been to the baxi website for you and yours is not listed.

Sorry

their tech support # is Tel:08706 049049

It is just over 3 years old.
I could just phone them I guess, do they speak to joe bloggs though, or do you have to be a dealer / plumber?

it didn't say that you couldn't phone them.
it also had allsorts of info manuals etc but your was not listed

What a familiar tale. We had our Barcelona (I think they now refer to it, or the replacement as the Baxi 100 HE) installed about 3 years ago and in March it started doing the same as described. It seemed to get better, but now, as soon as it's cold and the poor little thing has to do some decent work - which is what condensing boilers are meant to be all about - it starts flashing that lockout light every time I try and get it to come on.

I could only find one other related article on the Web, which referred to a former Baxi engineer who spent most of his time fixing faults with Barcelona boilers. How encouraging. I guess that we both bought condensing boilers thinking of the efficiency and the lower costs, some choice that turns out to have been.

Did you get an answer to your problem and had it remedied ? We've got the engineer coming Monday (supposedly).

Cheers, Alastair.

doubt if you will get a reply from origonal poster of question, it was posted in January 2003

did the engineer solve the problem alastair? We have had a similar one, after two years of perfect working. Slightly less frequent lockouts, but after several 'solutions' from the service engineer, still playing up. Various bits replaced, but not the right one, obviously. I'd love to know if you've fared any better? thanks. Simonw

Hi Simon, we did get the fault remedied, but it took two weeks with a non-functioning boiler. As soon as the engineer took the cover off it was obvious that the short, curved section of pipe in which the thermostat and safety probes are mounted was totally corroded, thanks to a really slow leak at one end. The corrosion had caused the probes to malfunction and therefore the safety device was cutting in and locking out the boiler startup. I can't believe the amount of corrosion there was, we only had it serviced 9 months previously and you'd have noticed it straight away. Baxi were good, they responded to my emails in a prompt and courteous fashion and provided me with the part numbers so that we could order our own in as a backup to the heating engineers. Might be worth you checking to make sure that there is no corrosion visible on the probes.

Since replacing the flow pipe and the two probes it's been fine, but I do wonder whether we made the wrong decision installing a condensing boiler given the number of problems I've read - although I guess if all's working well, nobody complains and so you don't get a realistic view of the true percentage of malfunctioning boilers.

Good luck with your fault, life for two weeks with no heat was not fun.

Alastair.

I'm amazed to find someone else with a Baxi Barcelon - there don't seem to be that many about.
I'm having a similar problem with the boiler cutting out on startup. It's obviously related to temperature.

I have been in contact with Baxi, but they are relucant to answer any queries unless you are Corgi Registered and despite being a Chartered Engineer specialising in Control, they were reluctant to answer any questions.

I don't have any corrosion issues that simon had.

I did find out however, that the red lamp flashes if the overheat protection thermostat (part number 242235) senses too high temperature. I duly purchased one and fitted it, but alas, this did not cure the fault.

I'm about to purchase the thermistor (part number 242458) and try that, but I don't hold out much hope.

Anyone any other ideas?

Is the lock out light flashing?
If not it could be that the condensate trap is blocked or there is moisture on the white wire probe on top of the trap.

I also have a Barcelona and recently it has started to give me trouble but the fault seems to be intermittent, sometimes it will light and sometimes not. The lock out light stays on permanently when locked out and the moisture detector. The bloke who serviced it is scratching his head over the problem.

any ideas out there

Thanks for the reply Stevie, but I've already been there on the condensate trap - I've now disconnected that completely on the advice of one of the service engineers.

Last night, I found another overheat temperature sensor on the air/gas inlet to the boiler. It's the same type as the one on the water discharge. I swopped that for my spare, but again no luck.

Any other ideas?

Baxi Barcelona... what a nightmare! Had mine for 3yrs, had Baxi out 4 times... lockouts are the most common... loads of bits 'die'. The engineers say 'they all do it'...

My question to *all* Barcelona owners... how noisy is yours?! Mine sounds like a jet plabe when it fires up... it is the noisiest boiler I have ever heard... I truely wish I had never bought it. It is great at heating water fast... when *it* wants to...

Help guys!

Perhaps Baxi named it Barcelona in recognition of the comparison to the noise and hubbub of that great City ! We had it getting noisy once, it used to explode upon ignition - which was heartening and a little too much of an early morning wake up call for me. The gas man came and blew on some bit of something or other which had some dust on it and that was it sorted.

What else, oh yes, the first problem was rain being blown through the outlet pipe back into our kitchen, then it was the exploding ignition, then it was the lockouts which seemed to get better as the weather warmed up and the boiler had to do less, then it was the permanent lockout because of the corrosion. Although because it was a slow leak I can only assume that after our service the joint wasn't properly sealed, so don't think that can be blamed on the boiler itself.

Two heating engineers we've had round recently have suggested ditching the condenser and fitting a non-condensing boiler because some legislation from 2005 will apparently force all new boilers to be condensing. Is this the case and if so, should we jump now ?

'Being broken/not happy' noises we all expect... the noise I'm talking about is the regular 'I am gonna start up now... ready!' It really makes a racket... much like a turbine starting up or salon hairdryer running. It is very annoying... and quite embarrassing when we have friends for dinner! 'That a jumbo in the kitchen glacing the top of the creme brulee?!'

*IF* I could get a quiet boiler that would fit to the two-pipe flue that I have now had routed up through the house I would... I wish Baxi had a home survey department.

Any body know how to get their hands on a service manual for the barcelona (a soft copy would be nice).
I'm sick of this intermittent fault, the boiler goes as far the stage before ignition and then lock out (sometimes). I suspect the PCB but it was replaces two years ago and as an electronics engineer I would expect more than two yeats service from a pcb.
