...in personalised number plates. i find it difficult to try and envisage a reason for buying one.

ok, recognition regards advertising oneself may be a positive thing, as it could be beneficial to a business. personally i think it is all vanity and self indulgence.

then again, i have always regarded a vehicle as a means of transport and nothing more.

For some a car is a status symbol, a symbol of their wealth. I mean those with nice Jags, Bentleys etc.

Although I have considered buying a plate (from DVLA ofc) with SC04 SRC on it. Though nobody else would know what it meant. And it would de-value my car by 2 years ;)

But there will always be those that apply different fonts to their plates on their souped up Escorts and 106's and Corsas. I follow them, grinning, knowing that with the money they spent on doing up their car, they could have bought a decent sport version of their car that would 1. go quicker and 2. be quieter / legal!

There is a bakery company round here whose owner bought personal plates for all the vans. They all have 200 MEH in them, with differing prefix letters. MEH being the owner's initials. Why? Just being clever I guess.

thanks mod's for moving this, i had a blond moment.

it is not easy being a father of two bonkers children and being a regular poster on this forum. :p

After 33 years of marriage it can be really difficult to buy the Wife something other than bubble bath or flanalette nighties.

So I got her a personal plate with her initials and birth day on it. She was well happy. It only cost me £200 and I was earning enough then to buy it.

I wouldn't say it is a status symbol on her little 4 X 4. She likes it and that is what counts when one wants a quiet life. :)

is a car more of a status symbol than say, a house?

surely something as easily purchased as a car is nothing more than pi££ and wind?

less is more that's what i think.

4 x 4?

why does she like it? what is it about a personalised number plate that she likes?

I've had a 5 character private plate for about 10 years. I have considered buying another. I bought it because I like to be different. Simple as that.

Noseall, I live in the land where it's all about cars. No cars, no Germany. Practicaly the whole economy depends on them and there's a mentality here with some people that is "your car defines you" or "your car is what you are". Thankfully thats just a few ... well ... Quite a few ....

Different to what, every other car on my street has a "private plate" soon it will be different to have an ordinary plate, I will have to go private to blend in with the crowd soon, might get a Tribal Tatt to completely blend in

To my Mrs her car is like her cats - a member of the family. It's a little Suzuki, ideal for the lanes round here. It's apparently even got a name. Women are not like us Noseall. They do name inaminate objects!

different!

buying a personalised number plate is considered different. to what?

if that's your idea about being different, you need to buy yourself an imagination.

Imagination has nothing to do with it. And yes, it is different, if it wasn't different the majority would have them rather than the minority. That's what makes it different.

so you think buying an Irish number plate, and arranging it in some way that vaguely resembles your name, is a noble way of being different?
